He noted that the community “understands and supports the need to provide shelter for vulnerable people,” but emphasized the need for new policies and community consultation on the shelters. City staff are trying to find permanent or alternate housing for these residents before the end of August, the city said in their release. But the hotel’s role changed after city staff negotiated a two-year lease for the shelter, with an option for a further extension. “There are shelter residents that have come on hard times and just need help. There is an online community consultation with the city to discuss the future of the Roehampton Hotel shelter on Aug. 19.
