BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The police chief of Guilhungan, Negros Oriental was relieved from his post following the killing of his deputy by suspected communist rebels on Wednesday. Superintendent Mario Baquiran was replaced by Superintendent Cristopher Navida, Senior Superintendent Raul Tacaca, Negros Oriental police director, said yesterday. Senior Inspector Porferio Gabuya Jr. was shot several times while having coffee at a commercial establishment near the Guilhungan police station. He gave assurance that the NPA would abide by the ceasefire it declared from Dec. 24 to Dec. 26 and Dec. 31 to Jan. 1. Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Salamat, Northern Luzon Command chief, commended the soldiers for their ”efficient response” to combat terrorism in Northern and Central Luzon.
