NNN: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today announced plans to establish a mentoring program for African women working on neglected tropical disease programs. The mentorship is in honor of the late Dr. Mwele Malecela, who was one of Africa’s most respected scientists and public health leaders. The mentoring program will provide African women with leadership training skills, as well as travel and networking opportunities to become leaders and champions of efforts to eliminate neglected tropical diseases. Globally, more than a billion people are affected by neglected tropical diseases. Dr. Malecela served as Director of the Office of the Regional Director for Africa in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo and later as Director of the WHO Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases at WHO headquarters in Geneva.
