Nazri said that if the top two positions (president and deputy president) were contested, it could distract Umno members from focusing on GE14. According to Nazri, history has shown that any deputy prime minister in the country eventually made his way towards the Umno deputy president position. He said that Zahid, being the current deputy prime minister, is the “rightful heir” to the position of Umno deputy president. “According to precedence, it follows that when it comes to party elections, he (Zahid) should be the deputy president and it should not be contested,” he added. When asked if Nazri himself had any plans to contest the vice-presidency position in Umno, he merely said no.
