Although this has resulted in a more predictable and stable political environment, it will remain characterized by authoritarian proclivities and the strong influence of vested interests. In the Northern Triangle region (comprised by Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras), political turbulence has significantly increased. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele’s tendency to favor capricious policymaking and overall polarization has led to the gradual erosion of the political environment. Anti-corruption efforts in Central America were backed by the Obama administration between 2015-17, but this support declined in recent years. Authorities will remain focused on electoral matters, as well as complex political dynamics and growing citizen discontent, meaning that the overall political environment will remain challenging.
