Nationals place Howie Kendrick on disabled list with ‘right Achilles’ injury’

Howie Kendrick suffered an Achilles injury Saturday afternoon. (Alex Brandon/AP)A few minutes before the start of Saturday’s doubleheader nightcap, the Nationals announced they placed utiltyman Howie Kendrick on the 10-day disabled list with “a right Achilles injury” and called up right-hander Jefry Rodriguez from Class AA Harrisburg. Playing left field, Kendrick suffered the injury when he made a catch at the wall. The worst-case scenario is a ruptured Achilles, which would end Kendrick’s season and be a significant blow for the soon-to-be-35-year-old’s career. He hasn’t pitched since Monday, so he could give the Nationals length out of the bullpen should they need it.
