National vaccination drive: Medical students demand priority


Follows similar demand by private health workersAfter private healthcare workers requested for priority in receiving vaccination last week, students from the Faculties of Medicine and Nursing have also requested priority in receiving the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine. Speaking to The Morning yesterday (7), Ministry of Primary Healthcare, Epidemics, and Covid Disease Control Secretary Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva said that the request for priority from private sector healthcare workers, medical students, andnursing students has raised a demand for the remaining number of vaccines. “We are considering the private sector healthcare workers for priority, but we have also received requests to give priority to medical students and nursing students. The Association of Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes (APHNH) appealed to the Government on Wednesday (3) requesting that private healthcare workers receive priority, alongside national healthcare workers, in the ongoing Covid-19 vaccination drive. More than 156,000 government healthcare workers have been vaccinated so far under the first phase of the vaccination drive.
