The observance of Utkal Dibas or Odisha Day last week, normally a matter of course, became a subject of intense scrutiny this time, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s letter to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi put through the sieve of political meaning for any references to the State’s former Chief Minister and socialist leader Biju Patnaik. In his letter, the PM praised the late leader, stating that, “This is the soil that nurtured the great Biju Patnaik, whose life epitomises strength, courage and an unwavering commitment to nation-building. Biju Babu’s multifaceted persona inspires us all.”
