ANALYSIS: As many a pundit has pointed out, this has been the first open National Party leadership competition in decades. Don Brash resigned in 2006 following a loss to Helen Clark in the 2005 general election. Relative newcomer John Key looked set to take the leadership, but it looked like former leader Bill English would be running again, with a faction of 10-14 MPs. So it might pay to watch who comes second in the National race on Tuesday.
