National MP Hamish Walker defends remarks dubbed 'racist' by Labour

Four new Covid-19 quarantine facilities are set to open this week. First-term National MP Hamish Walker has been called racist for a press release claiming that up to 11,000 people from “India, Pakistan and Korea” could be heading to Dunedin, Invercargill and Queenstown for quarantine. Walker’s press release was calling for greater community consultation before managed isolation facilities were opened in that part of the South Island. Woods said Walker was wrong to claim that 11,000 people would be undergoing managed isolation in Dunedin, Invercargill and Queenstown. Woods said there had been no decision about putting quarantine facilities in that part of the country.
