British criminals fleeing to Europe tend to try and hide themselves in large expat communities, according to the National Crime AgencyLast year 150 of Britain’s most wanted criminals were arrested in Europe, showing how attractive it is as a hideout for crooks. According to the National Crime Agency (NCA), British criminals fleeing to Europe “tend to try and hide themselves in large expat communities” in order to blend in and avoid suspicion. In Europe the NCA primarily targets Spain, Cyprus and Holland as they have “traditionally seen a concentration [of British fugitives] in these communities based on the intelligence gathered”. Operation Captura, a UK-Spanish campaign, targets fugitives thought to be on the run in the country and out of the 86 serious criminals they were after, 74 have been arrested.
