The National Ballet of Canada had the highest grossing season at the box office in its history in 2016/17. Figures released at last week’s annual general meeting also show the company posted its eighth consecutive operating surplus, of $219,000 on revenues of $35,511,000 and expenses of $35,292,000. “The National Ballet’s 2016/17 season was an extraordinary year for the company, resulting in the highest grossing box office to date and exceptional support from our donor community,” executive director Barry Hughson said in a news release. The company presented 2,574 performances and outreach events in 2016/17 season with a total attendance of 1,373,891. There were 80 performances at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts with 154,277 in attendance, including James Kudelka’s Cinderella, new family ballet Pinocchio by Will Tuckett and John Neumeier’s A Streetcar Named Desire.
