Nation in need of its own sports arbitration agencyOver the past few months, Taiwan's sports news has been dominated by a series of disputes between local star athletes and the sports associations they belong to. She said her resignation came in protest of the Chinese Taipei Tennis Association's (CTTA) decision that she could not bring her older brother on board as her coach. These cases offer only a small glimpse at the decades-long conflict that has been brewing between Taiwanese athletes and the local sports associations athletes must rely on in order to compete internationally. However, many of these associations have long been treated as feudal domains by the select group of unaccountable bureaucrats who find themselves in charge. Many of those individuals who hold such authority lack the requisite professionalism and expertise to make such important calls.
