Nasheed urges India to ‘stop’ Maldives President Yameen

UncategorizedFormer President Mohamed Nasheed on Tuesday urged India to send troops to help remove embattled President Abdulla Yameen from power after political tensions grew in the Maldives. We would also like the US government to ensure that US financial institutions stop all US$ financial transactions of the regime leaders in the Maldives,” Nasheed, who is currently in Sri Lanka, said in a statement, adding: “President Yameen has illegally declared martial law and overrun the state. The people of the Maldives have a legitimate request to world governments, especially to India and the US.”The Sri Lankan Government has remained silent over the developments in the Maldives. China, the US and UK have expressed concern and urged their nationals to be vigilant when visiting the country. Yameen has declared a 15-day state of emergency and suspended parliament and ordered the arrest of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, estranged half-brother of Yameen, and the chief justice of the Supreme Court.
