2 32 choppers will be built. "In a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the proposal to acquire these choppers meant for coastal and maritime security worth around Rs 8,000 crore was given clearance," Defence Ministry sources told MAIL TODAY here. Of the 32 choppers to be built by the HAL, 16 each would be shared by the two services. The Coast Guard has these twin-engine helicopters at its different bases for carrying out search and rescue and coastal surveillance missions. The government has been focusing significantly on promoting defence indigenisation by taking a slew of reform initiatives including liberalising FDI in defence sector.
