Napier restaurant Bistronomy was once known as the fancy joint in town, the place to go for a special birthday or an anniversary and spend top dollar on a fine dining experience. The-Napier-Mail Bistronomy was intended to be fun and casual, but became associated with special occasions and fine dining. Dishes on the fine dining menu averaged around $18, but a single diner would need a few of them to have a full meal. Fine dining is a particularly challenging category of the notoriously challenging hospitality industry. With a country sliding towards recession, and tourism – one of the chief drivers of fine dining trade – halted indefinitely, the post-Covid reality for restaurants like Bistronomy looks even more precarious.
