Nairobi households spend 5 times higher than other counties- study

Living in Nairobi costs at least five times higher compared to other regions in Kenya, the latest inequality report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics report shows. A larger decline in inequality was recorded for male-headed households than for female-headed, and in urban, than in rural areas. Still, on gender, there was higher gender inequality in access to college and university education with women being severely disadvantaged. Male-headed households had higher access to safe drinking water, piped water, and improved sanitation. Inequality in asset ownership index (at 54 percent) and land ownership (at 71 percent in 2005/06 and at 61 percent in 1997) was higher than the inequality in real per capita consumption •Asset ownership inequality improved marginally over time while land ownership inequality worsened.
