Nada Farhoud: Time to end the scourge of airline waste in the skies

Airline passengers generated over 5.7 million tons – an average of 1.4kg per passenger – of cabin waste in 2017, a figure set to double within 15 years if no action is taken. But so are miniature wine bottles, half-eaten lunch trays, unused toothbrushes, plastic cups, water bottles, wrapping and other hallmarks of air travel. Heathrow came top with 100 water fountains spread across four terminals easily found with an online map. Approximately 13 billion plastic bottles are used each year in the UK. Simply adding more water fountains in airports and other public areas is one way to stop this.
