(Image: Corbis via Getty Images)According to Natural England, 580 million tons of carbon is stored here and about three-quarters is visibly damaged. One 2019 blaze in the Winter Hill area released 90,000 tons of carbon equivalent. In the past year, ministers have four times stated the need to phase out burning of protected blanket bogs. Restoring our peatlands should be a top priority and in turn they will protect us.
