NZTA cracks down on Wellington motorway queue-jumpers using Hawkestone St

The New Zealand Transport Agency is clamping down on drivers cutting across Hawkestone St to bypass State Highway 1 traffic. Currently, drivers can exit the motorway at the Hawkestone St/Karori off-ramp, turn right onto Hawkestone St, then immediately turn left to re-enter the motorway heading south. ROBERT KITCHIN/STUFF A traffic island and barrier already in place on Hawkestone St will be extended to stop people cutting across onto the motorway. ROBERT KITCHIN/STUFF People travelling west on Hawkestone St towards Tinakori Rd will still be able to turn left into the motorway. Other changes to the road layout will include a new pedestrian path across Hawkestone St, and the removal of coupon parking on the street near the on-ramp.
