NZSO opens its 2021 season with intense energy


New Zealand Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hamish McKeich with Stephen De Pledge (piano). The year always seems incomplete until the first New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) concert – but it felt fully launched after Friday night’s fiesta of sound. Carnival, however, made perfect sense as a theme linking four pieces united by their intense, sometimes manic, energy. Ravel’s music always needs to sound elegant, slightly knowing, even, and conductor Hamish McKeich managed that expertly.
