The year always seems incomplete until the first New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) concert – but it felt fully launched after Friday night’s fiesta of sound. Carnival, however, made perfect sense as a theme linking four pieces united by their intense, sometimes manic, energy. Ravel’s music always needs to sound elegant, slightly knowing, even, and conductor Hamish McKeich managed that expertly.
