NZ school students' volunteer tourism could be putting vulnerable people at risk


Every year hundreds of Kiwi secondary school students pay thousands to volunteer in poor communities overseas. She's one of the hundreds of Kiwi secondary school students who pay thousands of dollars to travel to developing countries on "exhibitions" each year. Two of the most popular providers are World Challenge and Antipodeans which work with a combined 135 New Zealand schools. Manurewa High School has changed the way it structures its annual volunteering trips to South East Asia, for ethical reasons. She sees school volunteering trips as generally less problematic than other types of volunteering because people tend to understand that school trips are about learning rather than doing.
