By acquiring long-time data center partner Mellanox, Jensen is doubling down on the high-performance data center market. The synergies of NVIDIA and Mellanox will come from their leading positions in high-performance computers (HPC) and long-term partnership. NVIDIA is already a leader in GPU-assisted HPC with its Tesla accelerator cards connected using the company’s NVLINK technology within a server and using Mellanox technology to connect between servers. As such, these data centers will have to have racks of servers that work in close cooperation; sharing resources across the data center. It will be a challenge for NVIDIA to strike the right balance of guidance and independence with the Mellanox team.
