Auditor general’s report finds 68% of government agencies ‘do not adequately manage privileged access to their systems’Two-thirds of New South Wales government agencies fail to protect privileged data, leaving confidential information vulnerable and putting the public at risk of identify fraud. The report also found that 31% of agencies do not “limit or restrict” privileged data to appropriate staff. “If agencies do not implement these controls, they may also breach NSW laws and policies and the international standards that they reference,” Crawford found. The protection of the mass of private data in the hands of government agencies has become of increasing concern. The breach prompted a Senate inquiry and the government announced a review into the security of Medicare online.
