COTABATO, Philippines — Communist rebels shot dead an off-duty militiaman in Arakan town Thursday, the third in just five weeks months, the military said. “Initial information reaching us indicated that he was hog-tied before he was shot dead,” Belvis said. NPAs killed CAFGU member Joel Batawan in an ambush last September 20 in Barangay Santo Niño, Arakan. Batawan was on a motorcycle en route to Barangay Ganatan, Arakan when NPAs positioned at one side of the road opened fire with assault rifles killing him on the spot. NPAs shot dead in an ambush three days before Jeffrey Bitonio, also a CAFGU member, in Barangay Anapolon, Arakan.
