It turns out there was a problem on the border after all. For years now, people have been walking across sections of the U.S.-Canadian frontier to claim asylum or refugee status in Canada. The problem is this: the agreement only covers claimants who cross the border at an official crossing point. As columnist Chris Selley noted in the Post this week, this week’s federal budget quietly acknowledges that the border is a problem after all. It is in Washington’s brutal self-interest to turn a blind eye while these tens of thousands of people become Canada’s problem.
