It has become too easy in recent years to tune out reports detailing how far Venezuela has fallen. Even the country’s huge oil reserves could not sustain their populist wealth redistribution and central economic planning. The entire country today functions as a kind of living social experiment: how long can the people go without basic supplies before any semblance of civil order and the social compact simply dissolves? The problem has largely remained in or near Venezuelan waters, but is spreading. This new Venezuelan piracy is sure to become more common, and potentially more violent.
