NIT campus to be rid of ‘karuvelam’ trees

MoorthyA Chennai based Non Government Organisation (NGO), Juliflora Tree Abolishment Movement, has started the project of clearing “Prosopis juliflora” (seemai karuvelam) trees in the campus of National Institute of Technology-T. He said that it had been planned to plant fruit bearing tree saplings in the campus after clearing the seemai karuvel trees. The NIT has roped in the services of movement as it was feared the species would make the NIT a jungle if it was not checked. According to an estimate, the evergreen and invasive species, has spread thick and fast on about 600 acres in the NIT-T campus.
