After many months of anticipation, the government has published its 10 Year Health Plan for the NHS in England. Its 10-year plan for the NHS, titled Fit for the future: 10 Year Health Plan for England, has now broadly set out how the government intends for these shifts will be achieved. WorkforceThe 10-year plan marks a slight departure from the 2023 NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, which focused on increasing the number of nurses, doctors and other healthcare staff in the health service. Despite calls from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) among other organisations to bolster the size of the nursing workforce, the plan indicated the government would be scaling back the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, which was published in 2023. “By 2035, we will have fewer staff than projected by the 2023 Long Term Workforce Plan, but each professional will achieve far more,” the plan stated.
