NHRC: NHRC issue notice to Maharashtra govt over rape-accused Army man


NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission, taking suo motu cognisance of media reports, has issued notice to the Maharashtra government and police in the Latur alleged rape incident, in which a girl has levelled allegations against an Army personnel.A 15-year-old girl has been expelled from her school in Latur district on the ground that the reputation of the institution would be tarnished as she had approached the police for a complaint against an Army personnel for raping her on the pretext of marriage.Local police also harassed her and demanded Rs 50,000 from the family to get FIR registered in the case. A case was registered only after the family approached the police superintendent.The NHRC has asked the state chief secretary, DGP, Latur district collector and district magistrate calling for factual reports within four weeks.It has also sent a copy of the proceedings along with the related media reports to the Union defence secretary seeking information about the departmental action taken against the guilty Army official, for which response is expected within four weeks.
