NHL’s Las Vegas expansion a ridiculous decision by any normal metric. But, hey, free money

The great uncertainty is whether Las Vegas can generate enough interest from visiting tourists to sustain a franchise. Las Vegas and its surrounding metropolitan area counts about 2.2 million people, according to the last census. It sounds like a lot of interest in an NHL team that doesn’t yet exist. And, on a ranking of U.S. media markets, Las Vegas comes in at 40th, behind every city that currently has an NHL team other than Buffalo. But if the league really wanted to score big in Las Vegas, it was probably better off having the owners kick in a couple of million each and playing a high-stakes craps table.
