Without them, the world would be a dreary environment ruled by general ignorance, mediocrity and uniformity of thought. OVERSIGHTOn the whole, there has never been a situation where relations between the media and policymakers were cordial. In another sense, the relationship between State players and journalists is symbiotic; none can do without the other. DEMOCRACYAs a journalist, my greatest worry is that the government and the media seem to be set on a head-on collision during which there can be only one winner. It will be necessary for both sides to pull back a little because as indicated earlier, neither the media nor the governing elite can do without the other.
