NEWS BRIEF: Georgia breaks records for turtle nest numbers

Endangered sea turtles in Georgia are busy multiplying and have hit a new record for the number of nests they’ve made this season, according to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center in Jekyll Island. There were 236 sea turtle nests recorded in the area, the highest number ever, and at least 6,000 baby loggerheads have hatched from those nests, CNN reported. The nesting loggerhead sea turtle population in Georgia has increased by around 4 percent each year since the 1990s, the Sea Turtle Center estimates. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says all five species of sea turtles found in waters along the coast are protected by state and federal law, and loggerhead nests are monitored by biologists to protect them from poaching and habitat destruction during the spring and summer nesting season.
