The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said on Thursday that more than 1 million Filipinos have taken the first step in registering with the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys), also known as the National ID system. “There are also many who see the benefit of the national ID. Signed by President Rodrigo Duterte in August 2018, Republic Act 11055, or the “Philippine Identification System Act,” aims to establish a single national ID system for all citizens and resident aliens of the Philippines. Chua earlier said the national ID system could also transform how these services are accessed and delivered, and hasten the growth of the country’s digital economy. The national ID would give Filipinos and resident foreigners “a legal and digital identity [so] that no other IDs [will] be needed to transact, for instance, with the government,” he added.
