The NCPB should stop buying and selling maize in a failed effort to stabilize the market. The NCPB says it is ready to sell 2.7 million bags to maize millers. It is supposed to stabilize the market by buying maize in times of plenty and selling it in times of shortage. Instead it buys damp maize from well connected large farmers at above market prices and can only sell it at a loss. The National Cereals and Produce Board has rejected claims by millers that the maize in its depots is old and unfit for human consumption.
