The National Construction Authority is today moving to court to suspend the construction of more than 600 substandard buildings in the country. NCA chief executive Daniel Manduku yesterday told the Star that a countrywide inspection established that 600 buildings risk collapse, most of which are in the Nairobi Eastlands area. In June, a seven-storey building collapsed in Kware Pipeline, Embakasi, and in May, a building under construction collapsed in Kutus, Kirinyaga county. There has however been no enforcement, which is why we are moving to court,” Manduku said. “In some cases, owners seek out unqualified contractors while in others, it’s the use of substandard building materials and poor construction methods,” he said.
