“He was the man.” Kind of like Nowitzki himself these days, if you think about it. The seven-foot Nowitzki may not have ever been the most astonishing athlete in the NBA, but he’s been one of the best players for years. The 2006-07 most valuable player, a champion with Dallas in 2011, is a surefire hall of famer and considered by many to be the best player in NBA history who was not trained in North America. Nowitzki surpassed 31,000 career points earlier this season — on a patented one-legged fadeaway jumper — and he’s sixth on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. It’s a legendary career winding down with little team success, which Nowitzki is handling with aplomb.
