While the photo is bound to spark fears amongst conspiracy theorists of an alien invasion, thankfully there’s a simple explanation for the ‘spot’. The spot is in fact the International Space Station , as it passes over our lunar satellite. Look closely at the image, you should be able to see outline of the ISS’s solar panels and trusses. NASA said: “The bright crater Tycho is visible on the lower left, as well as comparatively rough, light colored terrain known as highlands, and relatively smooth, dark colored areas known as maria.”
