NASA Uses 100 Year Old Experiment To Measure A Star's Mass [Infographic]

Nearly 100 years later scientists at NASA decided to use the Hubble Space Telescope to run the experiment again. They chose Stein-2051B, a white dwarf star about 17 light years away and a background star that is about 5,000 light years away. They waited until Stein-2051b passed in front of the background star and observed as it deflected the light from the background star. This experiment was also able to help confirm the mass of Stein-2051b. With that confirmation, scientists now have a new way to measure the mass of other stars in the cosmos.
