Video footage published online don't only shows the shaking in Mexico's capital during the quake, but also strange lights in the skies, quickly labelled as Earthquake Lights on social networks and even news sites. David BressanEarthquake Lights (or EQLs) are supposedly luminous phenomena observed before, during or after a strong earthquake. Italian seismologist Giovanni Giuseppe Bianconi explained in 1840 the lights as burning gas, coming from fissures opening during a quake. However, burning gas could explain only small flames, not large glowing clouds. EQLs could also be a sort of glowing gas, formed by the ionizing properties of this energy.
