They say if you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes truth; and it looks like that is the mantra among Myanmar’s military these days. If they are so confident that human rights are not being violated, why have they repeatedly refused the UN’s requests to investigate the Rakhine situation? In fact, they have refused entry to a UN panel tasked with looking into allegations of abuse after a smaller military counteroffensive launched last year. The international community should be past the point of wondering whether or not ethnic cleansing is really going on in the Rakhine state — the killing is happening and that is a fact. Myanmar’s tactics are clearly designed to prevent or stall international action, and the longer the UN and other international agencies take to act, the closer the Myanmar army will come to achieving its brutal goals.
