Author Maggie Brookes knew her father had been taken prisoner in the Second World War. I only found out he’d been a prisoner of war because Mum once told me – and I knew never to ask him about it. Seven thousand British soldiers were taken prisoner in the same battle. There Harold and Dad experienced the excruciating boredom of prison camp life for almost a year.
