However, the Uighur issue is now at the centre of newly elected US president after former president Donald Trump's administration labeled China’s repression of Uighur Muslims as genocide. China was recently caught red handed trying to patent facial recognition tech which could be used for singling out Uighur ethnic groups. Human rights defenders are going to monitor the Biden’s administration as it tries to balance its diplomatic options between having cordial relations with Beijing and also defending the rights of minority groups there.
