She is working on converting all of Tagore’s songs to Western notation, the most widely used form of writing music, hoping it will make his music more accessible to the global community. The biggest hurdle in sharing the music is the notation, with Tagore songs set in an Indian notation called akarmatrik swaralipi. “We have transcribed 100 songs into Western notation,” said Chakraborty. The goal is to have 500 songs at least, which will showcase the breadth and the depth of Tagore’s music. Growing up, Tagore’s music permeated Banerjee’s everyday life.
