Mushtaq Mahar to head Sindh police: report

The federal government has decided to appoint Mushtaq Mahar as the police chief of Sindh on the insistence of the Sindh government, according to a media report on Friday. Mahar was one of the five police officers recommended by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government for the post of the Inspector General of Police. Even though Prime Minister Imran Khan had agreed to replace Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Kaleem Imam with Mahar, the federal cabinet later decided against appointing Mushtaq Mahar as the police chief. “After consultation between the prime minister and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Mushtaq Mahar’s name had been suggested [in the cabinet] for the Sindh IGP position but cabinet members from the province strongly opposed the idea,” said government spokesperson following the meeting last month. “Keeping in mind the majority view, the prime minister has asked the Sindh governor to discuss the matter with the province’s chief minister.
