Many people would like to work with their best friend, but for Vanessa Barneby and Alice Gates, the duo behind wallpaper company Barneby Gates, it made perfect business sense. In fact, it was Alice’s print designs that led to the idea of doing a wallpaper collection together. Today, we are meeting in the Barneby Gates studio, a slick converted barn in Alice’s house, in a village near Pewsey, Wilts. ‘I was pregnant and beginning to worry I would live a very insular life with a baby,’ says Alice. ‘So it was topical what we wanted to put on our walls.’At the beginning, the idea wasn’t just wallpaper.
