People sang and cheered after Robert Mugabe ended his 37-year-old rule as president under pressure from the military and his political party. On Saturday, war veterans organized a citizen’s march that saw nearly 1 million Zimbabweans out in the streets demanding President Robert Mugabe step down. While there’s little evidence that they wanted Mugabe to stay, Zimbabweans have consistently said that they support and prefer democratic rule. As the commander in chief of the Zimbabwe defense forces, Robert Mugabe was the only person with the authority to command the military. However, it looks as though some of these requirements will be suspended as ZANU PF rushes to install Mnangagwa as president.
