Hearing the prime minister quote my father, Sir Nicholas Winton, in her resignation speech was obviously a huge surprise. It is good to know that his words to her and others regarding the need for ethics and compromise in politics were not forgotten, though perhaps the timing and method of her attempts at compromise would have not altogether satisfied him. My father’s legacy has been defined by his role in the Czech and Slovak Kindertransport when he organised the rescue of 669 children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia on the eve of the Second World War.
