Hands off, old-fashioned and somewhat removed – that’s how the royal family was described when Elizabeth ascended the throne. And for a while, that’s how it remained. It was all the queen knew, it was how she had grown up: there was the royal family and then there was everyone else. Royals waved from a distance to their subjects – and a particular back-handed, stiff-fingered waft of the hand at that. They beamed from balconies, they remained behind safety glass in cars.
