For example, the theme entry at 17A is “VICTOR/VICTORIA,” which, on its surface, is about Julie Andrews’s character cross-dressing to get a job, but is really a look at the spectrum of queerness. And like that puzzle, this one uses left/right symmetry because of the lengths of the theme answers. But as an indie constructor, I enjoy doing unconventional things to get themes to work, and I’m always pleased when they do. It took a lot of trial and error to get it to work, but I’m pleased with the result. Still, even though this issue is not addressed in the clue, I’m glad Will and his team took the time to discuss it carefully and to consider multiple viewpoints and suggestions.
